SEWRC: Between 40-80% water losses during its transmission in the country

“The losses of water and sewage companies from theft of water are a great problem. Losses are between 80% and 40% for the country, and 55% in Sofia. The big problem this year is the shortage of water due to aridity. However, this problem can be solved in the long run because investments for renewing the sewage network and developing new sources of water are needed,” said Angel Semerdjiev, Chairman of the State Energy and Water Regulatory Commission (SEWRC). He specified that according to current estimates, investments of around BGN 2 bn will be necessary for the purpose over the next five years.
The third problem for the water and sewage companies themselves is the reduced consumption of water on the part of industrial users who have found their own water sources.
”SEWRC is now working on the proposal of the Ministry of Regional Development and Public Works for licensing the companies from the water sector,” Semerdjiev said on Tuesday during a public discussion on the state of the water supply companies in Bulgaria.
The licensing will allow the consolidation of water and sewage companies, so that they will be able to perform their functions at a higher level. Moreover, an extremely great interest on the part of investors in the bigger water and sewage companies has been observed. This will ensure finances for keeping the networks in a better condition. Therefore, a consolidation of the companies is projected and their number will decrease from 62 to 28.
Angel Semerdjiev has proposed that the current companies meeting the criteria for licensing should join the network and obtain licences for operators and select the other companies via a competition.
